Yoo Doo Right

Experimental Montreal-based trio Yoo Doo Right, share new single/video "Eager Glacier" from their new album From the Heights of Our Pastureland is coming out November 8th via Mothland.

As experimental rock trio Yoo Doo Right prepare to release their forthcoming LP, From the Heights of Our Pastureland on November 8th, 2024 via Mothland, the band share their new single, the emphatic “Eager Glacier”.

To the beat of turbulent drums, the listener is guided through sprawling soundscapes of deep synthetic whirs, unrelenting electric strings, mercurial melodies, and distorted reels. With grave aplomb, this escalating and far-reaching piece from the Montreal outfit takes you on a sonic journey across ambient, post-rock and drone metal.

The video for "Eager Glacier" was created by Stacy Lee, who said the following

"I’ve recently embraced the surrealist and absurdist in me, and this project reflects my desire to blur the lines between reality and the subconscious.

Inspired by my recent deep dive into experimental cinema, I've come to see genres as fluid—cinema, like music, exists on a continuum, and my work is an ongoing exploration of that entire range.

This video doesn’t follow a traditional narrative but instead invites viewers into a space where they can create their own meaning.

Through visual experimentation, I wanted to transport us into another dimension, where magic literally unfolds on screen."

Since 2016, Yoo Doo Right have released two full-lengths (Don’t Think You Can Escape Your PurposeA Murmur,Boundless to the East), three EPs (Nobody Panicked and Everybody Got On, EP2, The Sacred Fuck EP), and a few singles, including a 7” split with Acid Mothers Temple, whilst touring extensively in Canada, the United and Europe. Along the way, they have performed at notorious events such as SXSW, Levitation, Dunk! Fest, Sled Island, Treefort Music Fest, and M for Montreal, also opening for the likes of DIIV, A Place to Bury Strangers, Wooden Shjips, Kikagaku Moyo, and FACS.

Scheduled for November 8th, 2024 via Mothland, From the Heights of Our Pastureland is yet another solemn if defiant entry in Yoo Doo Right’s rich music catalogue, an honest and patient sonic poem about the destructive process of unbridled expansion in the name of "progress", the inevitable collapse and what it means to rebuild.

From the Heights of Our Pastureland is an expanding succession of highly dynamic musical epics intertwined with emotionally-charged sonic explorations. Whether carefully harvesting melodic soundscapes, repeating mantra-like arrangements with mechanical precision, digging unfathomably deep amidst abyssal electrical signals, or simply saturating reels with raucous abandon, Yoo Doo Right set out to further develop ideas they previously started exploring, in turn offering a third full-length that is darker, heavier, even more ominous than their previous works.

Yoo Doo Right began writing From the Heights of Our Pastureland while visiting a remote cabin near Saguenay, QC in the Winter of 2023. Snowed in, Cober, Masson and Talbot simply played for three days straight, archiving anything and everything, musing about "the storm of colonialism, the collapse of capitalism and the massive undertaking it is to rebuild with past mistakes taken into deep consideration", and ultimately laying the groundwork for their third opus.

Thus, the album draws deep inspiration from parallels drawn between natural phenomena ranging from bad weather to environmental disasters and the equally overwhelming force of our socio-political frameworks. Also compelled by the commodification of art, AI and algorithmic art, the trio later revisited the pieces, altering their initial compositions by way of element juxtaposition and extensive sound design. In embracing their penchant for sonic manipulation in all of its forms, the experimentalists achieved  an uncanny equilibrium between unresolved tensions and soothing resolutions.

To commit the album to tape, Yoo Doo Right chose producer Seth Manchester (Battles, Lightning Bolt, Lingua Ignota) at Machines with Magnets (Pawtucket, RI), before turning to Amar Lal (YlangYlang, Patio, Washer) at Macro Sound (Oakland, CA) for mastering duties, poised to unearth their best work to date.

The resulting 42 minutes of experimental rock found on From the Heights of Our Pastureland (November 8th, 2024 via Mothland) feel like a beautiful yet sinister sonic tempest, aptly showcasing the Montrealers’ artistic resolve and eerie creativity.

Highly recommended for fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Big|Brave or METZ.
