Black Doldrums
London post-punk trio Black Doldrums release new single & video "Compulsion" from their forthcoming third album ‘Repetition Compulsion’ out November 13th 2026 on Fuzz Club.

Following the acclaimed single ‘Repetition’, London post-punk trio Black Doldrums shared last week the track and video ‘Compulsion’, the second to be lifted from their forthcoming third album ‘Repetition Compulsion’ out November 13th 2026 on Fuzz Club. Alongside the new music, Black Doldrums are announcing UK and European tour dates for Spring 2027 in support of the new album.
The newly-announced ‘Repetition Compulsion’ completes Black Doldrums’ interconnected “State of Mind Trilogy”: a three-album exploration of the psychological forces that shape identity, memory and human connection, which began with their 2022 debut, ‘Dead Awake’, and most recently, 2024’s ‘In Limerence’.
Blending post-punk, darkwave and goth, ‘Compulsion’ transforms the hypnotic pulse of previous single ‘Repetition’ into something more urgent and explosive – rich with chorus-soaked guitars, analogue synths, driving bass and motorik rhythms.
The band’s Kevin Gibbard says of the single:
“I wrote ‘Compulsion’ as the second part of our first single, ‘Repetition’. It originally started life as one piece of work, but naturally split into two separate songs. That gave us the opportunity to directly
reference ‘Repetition; while continuing the central themes of the album and reinforcing the idea that all of the songs are connected in some way.
The opening line, “Here we are again, repetition once more”, immediately brings the two songs together. Where ‘Repetition’ has a more dirge-like feel that
literally reflects the idea of repetition, ‘Compulsion; has a greater sense of forward motion, building in intensity as it develops. We’re really proud of how the track fits within the wider concept of the album.
We wanted to take a considered, interconnected approach, and I think ‘Compulsion’ really capturesthat idea. It feels like a natural progression from ‘Repetition’, while also taking the story and the sound somewhere new.”
Taking its title from the psychological concept first explored by Freud, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ examines “the unconscious tendency to recreate familiar emotional patterns, destructive behaviours and inherited cycles from the past.”
Across its eleven tracks, founding members Kevin Gibbard and Sophie Landers explore how these repetitions shape intimate relationships, collective memory, politics and mental wellbeing, creating a record that feels both deeply personal and quietly universal. Through evocative songwriting and cinematic production, Gibbard says
“the album invites listeners to confront the echoes of the past while questioning whether those patterns can ever truly be broken.”
Drawing inspiration from 80s gothic post-punk, synth-pop and darkwave, alongside the atmospheric film scores of John Carpenter and Vangelis, the London trio build on the emotional and sonic foundations of these influences to create something cinematic, modern and unmistakably their own.
Every song on ‘Repetition Compulsion’ has been crafted with intention, balancing darkness with beauty to create an intensely personal listening experience rich in melody, atmosphere and emotional depth.
Layers of analogue synths, chorus-soaked guitars and driving rhythms frame songs that are intimate, immersive and emotionally precise, while the album’s expansive production gives each composition a striking sense of scale. Rather than relying on nostalgia, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ presents post-punk as a living, evolving form, embracing atmosphere without sacrificing melody, introspection without losing momentum, and darkness without abandoning hope.
Rich in detail, artistic ambition and emotional weight, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ is Black Doldrums’ most fully realised work to date. Bringing the “State of Mind Trilogy” to a compelling close while confidently signalling the beginning of a new chapter, the album further establishes Black Doldrums as one of London’s most distinctive voices in modern post-punk and the dark alternative underground. Arriving off the back of heavy UK and European touring over the last couple of years, ‘Repetition Compulsion’ is released into the world on November 13th 2026 through London-based independent Fuzz Club.
