We spend our lives holding on to perceived wrongs from the past, of how someone didn’t live up to our expectations, or let us down in ways that were unfair and unjust. And I, for many years and various reasons, had held those feelings towards my mother, feeling that I was waiting to forgive her for something, despite the deep love I feel for her every day. But in a moment of clarity, I understood, understood the common humanity in all our experiences, and especially those of her and myself. Mothers are our entire worlds as children but they can’t be expected to be more than human. My mother not only had all the challenges I had faced as, a child, but countless others I couldn’t begin to imagine. The gift of the song confirmed to me that acknowledging the common humanity in others, with all their flaws and imperfections, is the way of truth and growth. Holding onto judgement or resentment only kept me sick and bonded to the past. Only once we truly accept this can we see truth, and healing can begin. I have an amazing mother, a true original. An incredible explosion of life and colour. She gave me everything she had to give and more. Sonic Bloom is a tribute to her, and the power of music to heal.
