ZOEE shares new video "The Empty Glass" & announces London show. Debut album 'Flaw Flower' out now via Illegal Data.
London-based artist Zoee releases folkloric fourth video for album track ‘The Empty Glass’ from her debut album 'Flaw Flower'.
The video, shot in rural Kent and made in collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Robert George Sanders and director Dani d’Ingeo, invites the viewer into an otherworldly ceremony about family, love, magic and time.
On the song Zoee said
“Lyrically ‘The Empty Glass’ explores how the seasonal rhythm of our lives can summon waves of nostalgia and self-reflection.
Sometimes these moments of reflection can bring up difficult memories, so through the song I seek to make peace with the past in order to welcome in the new.”
Director Dani d’Ingeo, who is an Italian queer filmmaker and photographer living in London, offered further insight into the video concept, saying
“When working on the visuals for The Empty Glass, I was mostly driven by the raw emotion of nostalgia that the track evoked in me. It is a song about love and coming to terms with the past.
We began looking into collective healing and rituals and ended up in the magical universe
of folklore and paganism.
We wanted to transport the viewer into the same oneiric reality Zoee’s work lives in. Working with my extremely talented friend Robert George Sanders was an honour and a dream come true.
We sat down in his studio and he let me into his universe of fantastic colourful outfits and ever-powerful nature.
We discussed the themes of the song and my ideas of creating a healing ritual through the visuals, and we decided we had to make the shoot feel as genuine and close to an actual ritual as we could. Witchcraft never happens casually.”
Both Robert, a multidisciplinary artist based both in London and the Kent countryside, and his mum Georgie practice witchcraft and so it was important that the collaboration allowed them to take the lead on the art direction for the film. Through a mix of digital and super 8 footage the video beautifully captures Robert’s interdisciplinary world of garments, make-up, objects and performance within the backdrop of the local landscape close to where he grew up.
The authentic energy captured on set is a very pure visual evocation of the sentiments of self-love and rebirth explored within the song.
Having previously released singles through Ryan Hemworth's 'Secret Songs' imprint and Vegyn’s label Plz Make It Ruins, as well as guesting as a vocalist on tracks with Hot Chip's Joe Goddard and with hyper-pop collective PC Music, Zoee has taken the past two years to nurture her voice and her sound for her debut.
‘Flaw Flower' is an honest and vulnerable glimpse into Zoee's interior world, a world she creates through marrying her real-life phone notes with imagery taken from modern works of literature such as "The Flowering Corpse" by Djuna Barnes, Sylvia Plath's "A Winter Ship" and Maggie Nelson's "Bluets". Through these 11 new songs, Zoee delves deep into her own emotional life, combining aspects of the everyday with the surreal in order to uncover the beauty found in being flawed.
The record nods to the avant pop of the 80s, an era that Zoee has always been drawn to thanks to the expressive and trailblazing music of women including Anne Clarke, Joan Armatrading, Cyndi Lauper, Rose McDowall and Anna Domino.
