Philadelphia based-Aidan Peterson aka Instupendo announces new

EP Boys by Girls, out on June 5th & shares the video for the track

Instupendo, aka Aidan Peterson, floats into earshot with original euphorically melancholy songs that listeners say they turn to when they feel, or want to feel, a particular way.

His signature therapeutic/emotional/nostalgic sound design has attracted a world-wide following as well as the admiration of fellow-artists, including notable collaborators such as

Grammy-winners RAC and Rostam, and more recently Toro Y Moi, all stylistic

counterpoints in his orbit

Following the April release of alt-pop single ‘Cinderella’ and announcement that he’ll be touring North America this summer supporting Aussie Golden Vessel (full list of dates below), today Peterson shares a new lush, beat-driven track, ‘Antidote’, via The FADER. The second single

from his forthcoming EP ‘Boys by Girls’ (releasing June 5th), it’s a bass-forward fever-dream

with swirling synths and harmonized vocals, representing a propulsive left-turn that

exemplifies the EP’s stylistic diversity.

"Antidote is a song about trying to be invisible, or anonymous, in public," Peterson says of the new track. "In the city, there’s always a weird moment

when you catch someone looking at you in passing on the streets, so

I try my best to avoid that phenomenon completely. I usually just

stare blankly into the distance hoping nobody makes eye contact.

The lyric “I feel like a bride to be” is a reference to walking down

the aisle at a wedding, how everyone’s looking at you."

‘Boys by Girls’ finds Instupendo artfully blending genres in novel ways, experimenting with textures and using unorthodox sounds within his characteristic interwoven melodies. Its

‘far flung’ inspirations range from Gud to The 1975, Lapalux to Four Tet, Japanese

House to Baths, and from Tourist to Toro Y Moi, while its more uptempo direction

was informed by 2018’s live performance experiences with Shallou,

George Fitzgerald, Ryan Hemsworth and Giraffage.

A beautiful step up as production goes, the EP also features Peterson’s own vocals for the first time.  He remarks, “After a lot of experimentation, I reached a point of

comfort with my voice and it became part of the sonic direction

of the project.”

The EP explores state of mind, emotion, and identity. About the title, notes Instupendo:

“I’ve always felt closer to girls, like I can be myself with them without having to conform to the kinds of expectations guys often project on

each other. The stories and feelings I’m conveying through many of

the songs on this project are about being able to just “be”, to be the

boy I am when I’m around girls."

Atmospheric opener "Entrance” is short and personal, setting the tone for the six songs that follow. Pop-leaning first single ‘Cinderella’, about the safety respect affords, begins with ethereal strings and hazy, muted keys before transitioning to resonant base and distorted synths, punctuated

by unorthodox sounds. Warped layered vocals lend a trance-like vibe to the whole affair

while an unexpected funky instrumental interlude adds groove.

Talk’ is an anxious, unconventionally arranged stream-of-consciousness ramble set to uneasy synths and ambient textures. More than anything else on 'Boys by Girls', it most closely calls

to mind Instupendo’s recent collaboration with Toro Y Moi, ‘50-50’.

‘Boys by Girls’ marks a turning point for the 19 year-old Instupendo, showcasing his production versatility while introducing surprising new capacities. It’s his unique sound evolving in exciting ways and in unexpected directions.
